Night Walk by Tom Duerden
The gentle thrum of frogs caresses my ear drums
Fireflies are all around
Speckles of illumination; a deep glittering blackness
I hope the crush and crinkle of dry leaves beneath my feet
Doesn´t alert nocturnal wanderers to my curious presence
A twig cracks as I press lightly down with my foot
The sound cuts through the atmosphere as sharp as a blade
I hold my breath and listen for movement in the undergrowth
A swoosh of air soars past my ears
A blur of frantic flapping disappears off into the canopy
The bats greet us with a close inspection
The forest is alive with the lyrics of nature
A language that words cannot define
Speaks to us through the gently swaying trees
If we listen for long enough
We will come to understand
Knowledge that cannot be taught
A consciousness as old as life on Earth
The wind cools my brow and I look to the sky
Clouds part and reveal the moon
Shadows cast and convulse through the forest
There is nothing to fear
In the dark of the night
